POST 53 NEWS
.
 GI Bill Transferability Has Arrived
For the first time in history, service members enrolled in the Post-9/11 GI Bill program will be able to transfer unused educational benefits to their spouses or children starting Aug. 1, 2009.  New Department of Defense guidance, issued June 23, 2009, establishes the criteria for eligibility and transfer of those education benefits.  The new GI Bill, signed into law June 20, 2008, provides the most comprehensive educational benefit package since the original bill, officially known as the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, was signed into law. For more information on eligibility and application procedures, see the Dept. of Veteran's Affairs Web site.

On 18 November 2008, Defense Department officials launched the "Wounded Warrior Diaries," a multimedia Web tribute in which American service members wounded in combat share stories.
.
The Wounded Warrior Diaries feature videos of service members relaying their stories in their own words. The videos are accompanied by a written account of their experiences. The site launched with four diaries, and a new diary will be added each month:  Website Here

"Need a DD-214 ?"
.
Veterans and the next of kin of deceased former service members may now use a new online military-personnel records system to request DD214 documents. Other individuals who need documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the Web site. Because requesters are asked to supply essential information to the NPRC for processing, delays that normally occur will be minimized by the online service.  Click on the Online Address to request DD214”s.

"New GI Education"
.
Under the War Supplemental Bill signed by the President on 30 June, many post 9/11 veterans and service members are now eligible for a new comprehensive education benefits package. The new bill goes well beyond helping to pay for tuition. Many veterans who served after Sept. 11, 2001, will get full tuition and fees, a new monthly housing stipend, and a $1,000 a year stipend for books and supplies. The new bill also gives Reserve and Guard members who have been activated for more than 90 days since 9/11 access to the same GI Bill benefits.
If the veteran served a total of at least 90 days on active duty in the Armed Forces will be eligible. However, the amounts of benefits received under this program are determined by the actual amount of accumulated post 9/11 service acquired.
